Vietnam tightens flight safety rules following multiple plane crashes around the world

The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) has issued a new Directive requesting that all airline carriers strictly comply with flight safety regulations to ensure absolute safety for all flights in and out of Vietnam.

The CAAV released Directive 2690 on Friday following several air tragedies that occurred throughout the world within one week, killing nearly 450 people in total.     In the directive, the CAAV called on all airline firms to stick to the rule that pilots must not attempt to land after they have failed to land more than once, and must follow all instructions from air traffic control.

Pilots must inform the air traffic control stations of any complicated weather conditions so that the station can give timely warnings to other planes that are operating in the affected air space or are prepared to fly into it.

In case of unfavorable weather conditions, pilots must wait to land safely or fly to a standby airport, the directive said, adding that when weather conditions are poor, a second standby airport must be arranged.

Taking off or landing is strictly banned in weather conditions below the required standards, the directive said.

Airline companies must observe a required process to cope with a storm as stipulated by the CAAV.   Hydro-meteorological stations at international airports Noi Bai (Hanoi), Da Nang (in central Da Nang City), and Tan Son Nhat (in Ho Chi Minh City), are required to broadcast updated weather forecasts fours time per day, CAAV said.

These airports are also required to release weather reports every 30 minutes around the clock, the agency added.

The latest air accident occurred on the afternoon of July 25, when an Indian military helicopter crashed in India’s state of Uttar Pradesh, killing 7 people, including two pilots.

The day before, on July 24, Air Algerie plane #AH5017 with 116 on board crashed in a desert area in north Mali while flying from Burkina Faso to Algeria. All of the passengers and crewmembers reportedly died in the tragedy.

On July 23, an aircraft of Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways crashed while it was trying to land on an island in Taiwan during a storm, leaving 48 dead. Finally, all 298 people aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 were killed when the airliner was shot down on July 17 in eastern Ukraine at Russia's border.
