A taxi was allegedly being chased after by a pickup truck when it hit multiple motorbikes on a flyover in Hanoi late Sunday, killing one person, while the cabby was wounded following a suicide attempt.

At least six others were injured after the four-seater Vinataxi vehicle crashed into the motorbikes on the Chua Boc – Thai Ha flyover in Dong Da District around 10:30 pm, police said at first light on Monday.

The taxi driver, apparently shocked after the multi crashes, jumped off the flyover from some 10 meters to commit suicide, but he only lost consciousness when hitting the ground, according to eyewitnesses.

The driver and the injured victims were immediately rushed to Bach Mai Hospital, a major multi-field medical facility in the capital.

One of the victims was reported dead, according to a source from the hospital.

The cabby, whose name has not been revealed, had got into a fight with two other men after he slightly collided with their pickup truck near the entrance to the flyover, according to footage from the camera of another car that followed the taxi.

While the three were quarreling, the taxi driver suddenly got into his car and rushed onto the flyover, running away with one of the two men from the pickup truck on the hood of his vehicle.

When the taxi reached the middle of the flyover, it suddenly moved to the wrong lane and crashed into the motorbikes.

The man on the hood of the taxi and those motorbike drivers all fell onto the ground and lost consciousness.

The taxi driver then got out of his vehicle and jumped off the bridge.

Traffic police arrived immediately at the scene and are still investigating the case.
