Vietnam has continued to wow fans at home with their performance in the ongoing 2016 AFC U-19 Championship in Bahrain, fighting out a brave draw against the United Arab Emirates during their second group game on Monday.

The 1-1 draw was significant for Vietnam as they had to play with ten men from the 58thminute, after captain Trong Dai was dismissed for a second yellow card.

Vietnam entered Monday’s match in high spirits, having secured a surprise 2-1 victory against North Korea in their Group B opener last week.

In the opening minutes of the contest the Vietnamese launched repeated attacks on the UEA goalie, eventually taking the lead in the 21st minute via a powerful shot from distance by Minh Di.

In the 58th minute however, UAE were awarded a penalty after Trong Dai was booked for the second time, fouling Almatroushi in the box. Substitute Husain Abdulla converted from the spot, leveling the score to 1-1.

After this the Arabians dominated the game in open play but were unable to convert as the defense of Vietnam held firm and goalkeeper Tien Dung made several important saves.

The 1-1 draw put Vietnam on top of Group B with four points from their two games, while the UAE remained bottom with only one point, having lost their opening tie 1-0 to Iraq.

The other game in the group between North Korea and Iraq is scheduled for 11:30 pm today Vietnam time.

The AFC U-19 Championship is organized every two years by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Now in its 39th edition, the U-19 Asian Championship is scheduled to run between October 13 and 30, involving a total of 16 teams. Qatar are the reigning champions.

As in previous editions, the 2016 tournament acts as the AFC’s qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, with the top four teams from the Bahrain tournament qualifying for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea.

As South Korea qualify automatically as hosts, if they are among the top four teams, the fifth-placed team will also qualify.
