Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping have agreed that the two countries will settle disputes by peaceful measures based on international laws, not letting them affect the two countries’ relations and peace and stability in the East Sea.

>> Vietnam highly values boosting ties with China>> Vietnam, China should settle disputes through negotiation: official The agreement was made, along with others, at their talks in Beijing after President Sang arrived there on June 19, starting his three-day state visit to China at the invitation of the Chinese President. The two sides pledged to carry out comprehensively and effectively the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) to maintain peace and stability in the sea area.

President Sang put an emphasis on the fact that fishing is the livelihood and interests of millions of Vietnamese fishermen. He requested that the two governments boost coordination activities to safeguard fishermen’s legitimate rights and interests. He suggested that the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture coordinate in implementing the agreement on establishment of a hotline, which would be signed during Sang’s visit, to serve the dealing with problems related to sea fishing. The two leaders applauded the signing of a revised agreement on border defense cooperation and the working statutes of the Vietnam-China Joint Committee on land border gate management on the occasion of Sang’s visit. They said these agreements will increase the efficiency of management cooperation and coordination between the two sides, maintaining security and order and facilitate exchanges and trade activities between the two peoples at border areas, contributing to building a joint border of peace, stability, cooperation and development. With respect to trade and investment cooperation, the President said the two countries should take effective and drastic measures to maintain the stable growth of bilateral trade, reduce Vietnam’s trade deficit, and raise two-way trade to US$60 billion by 2015. President Sang said he hoped that Chinese investors, with their advanced technologies, will strengthen investment in major projects in Vietnam in the fields of infrastructure, manufacturing, and supporting industries. President Xi Jinping said China highly values President Sang’s visit, considering it as a new boost to the relationship and mutual understanding between the two countries. He stressed that the traditional friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and China, which has been nurtured by leaders of both countries, is a precious asset to both parties and nation.
