Politics -- The National Assembly has completed its work after a month-long sitting in Hanoi, NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said yesterday. NA deputies actively participated in and debated in all designated issues, which drew the attention of the entire nation. The NA also approved the socio-economic development and State budget plans for 2013 and decided to accelerate the implementation of strategic breakthroughs in restructuring the economy, securing social welfare, and improving the effectiveness of international integration.Society -- A Vietnamese mother jumped to her death with her two children in the southern port city of Busan on Friday, according to police. The mother, 27-year-old Vo Thi Minh Phuong, jumped to her death from the 18th floor of an apartment building, holding her 7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son, they said. -- A grand ceremony was held yesterday in Hoc Mon District, Ho Chi Minh City to mark the 72th anniversary of the Southern Uprising Day (November 23), with the attendance of many high-ranking officials. Former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai also attended the event. -- The Bay Viet Training Joint Stock Company yesterday held a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City to grant pilot certificates, the first of its kind in Vietnam, to 20 trainees. Next month these pilots will attend an advanced training course in France to become commercial pilots with international standards. -- On charges of illegal drug trade, 40-year-old Nguyen Thanh Binh, who was chairman of Thien Binh Company in Nha Trang City, was  sentenced to 7 years and six months in prison at a hearing by the Nha Trang City People’ s Court yesterday. -- Police in Hanoi arrested 13 slot machine gamblers at 20A Alley 51, Luong Khanh Thien Street, Tuong Mai Ward, yesterday. They seized seven slot machines and many other items that served gambling.Business -- The Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative after 10 years of implementation has helped the Vietnamese Government improve economic development policies, in particular the investment environment. Japan now ranks first among 96 countries and territories that have invested in Vietnam, Planning and Investment Minister Bui Quang Vinh said at yesterday's meeting with the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam and the Vietnam-Japan Economic Committee (VJEC) in Hanoi. Takahashi Kyouhei, VJEC’s President, said that over the past 18 months Vietnam has worked with the Japanese side to hold close to 40 policy talks to deal with difficulties that surfaced in the investment process.Sports -- World number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia on Friday booked his place in the men's singles semi-finals after beating Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh at the Yonex-Sunrise Hong Kong Open. Lee powered his way through to a 21-19, 21-19 victory over Nguyen in the 34-minute encounter, advancing in the $350,000 Badminton World Federation Super Series tournament. He will face Japan's Kenichi Tago in the next round.
