-- Without the great sacrifice by Vietnamese soldiers, Cambodia would not have an opportunity to triumph over the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime, Chairman of the Cambodian National Assembly Heng Samrin told a ceremony in Hanoi on Sunday. The event was to mark the 35th anniversary of Vietnam’s victory in the southwest border defence war.

-- Huynh Thi Huyen Nhu, a former VietinBank banker, and 22 other defendants will be tried today for the case in which Nhu swindled some VND4 trillion from 15 banks, individuals, and organizations.

-- More than 6,000 taxi drivers in Ho Chi Minh City have received disciplinary actions from the city’s taxi association for violating its rules in 2013, the association reported Sunday. In the meantime, 8,818 drivers were honored for returning lost assets to passengers.

-- The attendants of the Tre café in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang were cleaning the facility early Sunday morning when they found a man dead on a hammock inside one of its tents. Initial inspections suggested that the man had committed suicide by drinking poison.

-- A man was fishing near Binh Loi Bridge 2 on Sunday when he saw the body of a woman with her hands tied floating on Saigon River.

-- A joint inspection of Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Phu District raided an unlicensed egg trading facility on Sunday and seized more than 90,000 eggs that have not undergone any quarantine procedures.

-- The Electricity Group of Vietnam posted total revenues of VND172.47 trillion (roughly US$8 billion) in 2013 and enjoyed an undisclosed earning, the state-run utility said at a meeting on Sunday.

-- Four years after being open to traffic, the Phu My Bridge that connects District 2 and 7 of HCMC is expected to hike its toll fees and extend the fee collection time due to the overrun investments.

-- Hanoi police caught two trucks red-handed on Sunday as they were carrying 14.5 tons of monosodium glutamate, 4.5 tons of pickled plums, and 10 tons of plastic door parts. All of the products are made in China and are without any papers or receipts.

-- The filmmaking contest Western Digital’s Project: Sci-Fi concluded its maiden season in Vietnam on Saturday and handed 16 prizes for the winners who are mostly young filmmakers.
