A huge Buddhist flag made from fresh flowers in Vietnam has been recognized as the world’s largest of its kind.

Venerable Sir Thich Tho Lac, head monk of Kim Lien Temple, on Tuesday received the certificate for the world’s largest Buddhist flag made up of fresh flowers from the World Records Union (Worldkings), Vietnamplus, an affliate of the Vietnam News Agency, reported.

The temple is located in Kim Son District in the northern province of Ninh Binh.

The flag, which is Venerable Sir Lac’s brainchild, measures 15 x 4 meters in size.

It was prepared by over 20 artisans and workers with 255,800 flowers of five varieties, which stand for the year 2558 in the Buddhist calendar and the solidarity of the clergy and Buddhists on five continents.

The flag was crafted on a 3D design model to accentuate its vividness and fine details and is hung over a base which weighs more than one metric ton and stands 90 centimeters tall.

The back of the flag features several lively Buddhist-themed images also made of real flowers. The flag and its base weigh over six tons in total.

The flag was crafted during the United Nations Day of Vesak 2014, which was organized in May last year at Bai Dinh Pagoda and several other places in Ninh Binh Province.

Vesak, or “Buddha Day,” is a major annual Buddhist festival as it celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha.

The massive object was recognized during the 2014 Vesak event by the Vietnam Book of Records (Vietkings) and Asia Book of Records as the largest Buddhist flag made of fresh flowers in Vietnam and Asia.

Vietkings later nominated the flag to Worldkings, which acknowledged it as the world’s largest of its kind on March 13, 2015.
