-- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc arrived on Saturday in Nanning City in Guangxi Province, China, beginning his six-day visit to the East Asian nation at the invitation of its Premier Li Keqiang. Prime Minister Phuc is slated to attend the opening ceremony of the 13th China-ASEAN Expo and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit during his stay there.

Society

-- Approximately 22,000 new cases of lung cancer are confirmed across Vietnam every year, doctors revealed at a seminar on Saturday. The fatal illness, predicted to further tighten its grip in the coming time, kills around 19,500 Vietnamese annually.

-- Construction has been ongoing illegally on the 44th floor of the Muong Thanh-Khanh Hoa luxury apartment and hotel, located in Nha Trang, a resort city in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa. The provincial Department of Construction on Friday decided to revoke the construction permit it had granted to the project developer over building violations.

-- Two siblings, aged 14 and 10, drowned on Saturday afternoon while swimming in a river in Rach Gia City, the capital of Kien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta. The body of another 14-year-old boy, who had drowned the same day in the province’s Kien Luong District, has yet to be retrieved.

-- Though the administration of Ly Son District in the central province of Quang Ngai has affirmed that its iconic garlic is getting increasingly harder to come by these days, with its prices rocketing threefold against the same period last year, the fakes remain rampant across the locality.

-- Dozens of metric tons of fish kept in cages on an island in Tinh Gia District in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa have mysteriously died en masse in recent days, causing damage of almost VND8 billion ($353,854).

-- On Saturday, locals and tourists flocked to an age-old village nestled in Hue City, home to UNESCO-recognized imperial monuments, in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, for a festival highlighting thanh tra (the city’s signature citrus fruit).

-- A lacquer artisan residing in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday snatched a bronze medal in weightlifting at the ongoing 2016 Rio Paralympics in Brazil.
