A big crocodile, that is believed to be the last Siamese crocodile individual (crocodylus siamensis) in Vietnam, was found dead on Saturday in a lake in the Phu Yen central province.
Le Dinh Hung, a resident in Song Hinh district, discovered the body of the crocodile when he was going fishing in Ea Lam 1 Lake on the morning of September 29.
The reptile weighed about 100 kilograms and is measured 3.2m in length.
In 2005, local authorities found signs of the presence of Siamese crocodile in Ea Lam commune.
The Siamese crocodile is classified as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.
According to local ecological expert Nguyen Ngoc Long, this fresh-water crocodile may be the last one of its kind in Vietnam.
According to Wikipedia, the reptile was believed to be extremely close to or fully extinct in the wild in 1992 and since then, a number of surveys have confirmed the presence of a tiny population in Thailand, a small population in Vietnam, and more sizable populations in Burma, Laos and Cambodia.
