Friday, December 30, 2016, 19:04 GMT+7

Vietnam and Cambodia’s border forces jointly inaugurated a friendship medical center on Thursday in a border commune in southern Vietnam’s Tay Ninh Province.

The Friendship Military-Civil Medical Center was the fruit of joint efforts by the Tay Ninh Border Defense Force and the military in Cambodia’s Svay Rieng Province.

Located at the 150th border marker between Tay Ninh’s Chau Thanh District and Svay Rieng’s Romeas Haek District, the 24/7 medical center houses a dispensary, two clinics, an inpatient treatment room, and three medics available for patients of both nationalities.

The center is expected to strengthen solidarity and cooperation between the two military forces and peoples, as well as contribute to a peaceful, friendly, cooperative, and prosperous relationship along the border, according to Col. Nguyen Hoai Thuong, commandant of Tay Ninh Border Defense Force.

Lt. Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien, commander of Vietnam’s Border Defense, said the two countries hope to open similar medical centers at other locations along their shared border in order to provide more timely treatment to citizens.

The two provincial military forces also signed a memorandum of cooperation the same day to provide mutual assistance in safeguarding border security, border patrol, crime prevention, and trade facilitation.

To honor the occasion, sixty of the neediest households in the area were presented with a pack of gifts valued at VND500,000 (US$22.50) each.
