A branch of the state-funded Vietnam Development Bank (VDB) in the southern province of Binh Duong has been desperately seeking for a borrower over the last two years, but has not found a single one. The poor operation of the bank has understandably displeased the province’s chief, Le Thanh Cung, chairman of the provincial People’s Committee. “Doesn’t it mean that 32 bankers of the branch have been doing nothing but still received payments for the last two years?” enquired Cung at a meeting with local banks on Wednesday. In response, branch director Nguyen Da Thanh said the problem is one of missing target customers. “Our bank only provide loans for projects in the water supply, health care, and education sectors, but there have been no such projects in Binh Duong over the last two years,” he explained.
