During the visit, the two sides are expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Over the past years, the Vietnamese-Belgian relations have seen good progress in various fields, including trade, investment and official development assistance (ODA). The two-way trade increased rapidly, increasing from US$395.4 million in 2000 to $1.2 billion in 2010. Last year, the figure reached $1.8 billion, up by 17 percent from 2012. In the first seven months of this year, the trade amounted to $1.3 billion. As the sixth largest export market of Vietnam among EU members, Belgium is importing from Vietnam various commodities, mainly seafood, coffee, rubber, footwear, apparels, handbags, and plastics. Meanwhile, Belgium mainly exports to Vietnam steel, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, machines and spare parts. Regarding investment, Belgium had 15 projects worth $155 million in Vietnam by August this year, ranking 35th among 96 countries and territories investing in the Southeast Asian country. In the 2011-15 period, Vietnam is the only Asian country to receive ODA from Belgium, valued at $78 million. Over the past several years, the two countries have also strengthened the exchange of high-level delegations and boosted their close coordination at multilateral forums. PM Dung’s visit to Belgium is part of his long-week tour, which will also include Germany, the European Union, and the Vatican, from October 12 to 18.
