A combination of severe downpours and high tides inundated many areas of Ho Chi Minh City on Monday evening, following another torrential rain on Sunday.

Rainfall brought over 65 millimeters of water to the southern city at the same time as the river tide peaked at 1.68 meters at around 6:00 pm, flooding 29 streets, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Drainage Co. Ltd.

In Binh Thanh District, floodwater caused multiple vehicles to break down and submerged houses, forcing local residents to scoop water from their homes.

“I have lived here for years, and the floodwater rises higher and higher every year,” Le Van Nam, a 70-year-old resident of the district, said.

“I have had my home’s foundation raised three times, but it keeps flooding.”

At 7:30 pm, most grocery stores had to close early.

Flood also affected streets in Nha Be District, forcing commuters to walk their motorbikes while others hired three-wheeled vehicles to carry their bikes home.

Luong Dinh Cua Street in District 2, traditionally one of the most vulnerable areas, was only filled with 10 centimeters of floodwater thanks to some construction units digging holes along its sidewalks to store water.   

According to the Southern Hydro-Meteorological Station, the water level of the Saigon River is expected to remain high with peaks at 1.65 meters at 5:00 pm and 1.66 meters at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, meaning flooding remains likely across the city.
