Politics -- President Truong Tan Sang wrapped up his State-level visit to China on June 21 with a joint communiqué issued by both sides, affirming that the two countries will boost their comprehensive cooperation. Both sides agreed to conduct frequent communication and dialogues in order to properly solve maritime issues, proceeding from the overall interest of bilateral ties. Both sides will implement the bilateral Agreement on Basic Principles Guiding the Settlement of Maritime Issues and carry out discussions that can result in basic and permanent solutions accepted by both sides. -- At their talks in Washington DC on June 20, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Army, General Martin E. Dempsey and visiting Chief of General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army Senior Lieutenant General Do Ba Ty reached consensus on deploying the agreed cooperative activities to elevate the two countries’ defense cooperation. Ty suggested the two sides continue implementing cooperative activities based on the signed agreement on defense cooperation. Dempsey affirmed that the US will back relevant parties to solve disputes by peaceful means, abiding by international law including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Society -- The depression in the East Sea has developed into a tropical storm, Bebinca, which is moving west-northwest at 15-20 kph towards the coastal area between Quang Ninh Province and Hai Phong City, packing winds of 64-72 kph.  The storm will bring heavy rains to Northern Vietnam from Saturday night, the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Center reported. --  The Kien Giang Province People’s Court has sentenced a local man, Le Thanh Nam to death for attacking a 32-year-old woman and her two children in a robbery in the house of the victims in September 2012. All the victims were seriously injured in the attack and one of the children died on the way to hospital.  Nam took away more than four taels (4,8 ounces) of gold from the house.

-- A tank truck of the Vietnam Petroleum and Oil Corporation (Petrolimex) was capsized and bust into flames on a road in the Laotian province of Savannakhet on Thursday afternoon.  The incident occurred after the truck hit a Lao seven-year-old child on the road, causing serious injures to the child, who was later taken to a hospital. The truck's driver sustained slight injuries in the accident. Lao police are investigating the case.

Business -- The price of gold continued going down to VND38.5-38.7 million per tael yesterday, but it was still much higher than the world gold price, which stood at $1,296 per ounce, or VND 32.9 million per tael. The continuous decline of gold prices has boosted the demand for buying gold in Vietnam, but the State Bank of Vietnam forecast that the demand will decrease sharply after June 30, when banks completed their transactions related to gold.    -- As of July 1, 2013, any individuals or organizations wanting to set up websites for online trading must inform their operation to the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Vietnam E-Commerce and Information Technology Agency (VECITA), according to Decree 52/2013 on e-commerce.  In case such websites provides e-commercial services, their operators must register those services with VECITA.  Lifestyle -- Italian magician Erix Logan has scheduled four performances Ho Chi Minh City at 8 pm everyday from June 5 to 7, a part of his first tour of Vietnam starting in late May. The 30-year-old magician has successfully conducted many performances in Hanoi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh.  Logan, whose real name is Enrico Del Buono, has had a passion for magic since he was very young and has developed special skills over the years to earn an international reputation for his performances.Sports -- The 2013 Southeast Asian Women Football Championship will take place in Myanmar from September 9-29. Besides the teams from ASEAN countries, three invited teams from Australia, Jordan and Japan will take part in the tournament. Vietnam is placed in Group A along with Australia, Thailand, Malaysia and Jordan, while Group B includes Myanmar, Japan, Laos, the Philippines and Indonesia.  The tournament is considered as a good opportunity for all the teams to improve themselves before entering the race to qualify for the World Cup 2014 in Canada in 2015.
