The Con Dao Museum in the Con Dao District in southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau was opened to public on September 6 after nearly 4 years of construction.
The 2-floor museum, costing VND65 billion (US$3.07 million) with nearly VND40 billion of which funded by Hanoi authorities, is built on a over-20,000-square-meter campus and has a 1,700 square meter exhibition space. Nearly 2,000 objects including images, artifacts and documents divided into four topics: Con Dao – nature and people, Con Dao – the hell on earth, Con Dao – battle and school and Con Dao nowadays are being displayed.
According to Tran Van Thong, director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism, the construction of Con Dao Museum is to improve the historical value of the Con Dao prison as well as the island.
