Society:

-- A gunman broke into a guesthouse and karaoke lounge in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho’s O Mon District and opened fire on two local policemen on Wednesday morning. This is a developing story. 

-- Five Vietnamese nationals died Tuesday after a boat carrying 18 people capsized on a Mekong River section that runs through Laos. Their bodies will be brought home soon for funeral services.

-- Vietnam inaugurated Tuesday the 8.9km long Nhat Tan Bridge spanning the Red River, which is the longest-ever in Hanoi. The construction of the bridge began in 2009 and cost an estimated VND13.6 trillion (US$646 million).

-- Kinh Duong Vuong Street in Ho Chi Minh City’s Binh Tan District was submerged under 40 to 50cm of water after a heavy rain on Tuesday afternoon.

-- Vo Van Thuong, a member of the Party Central Committee, has been appointed Deputy Party Committee Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City. The 44-year-old used to be First Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and Party Committee Secretary of the central province of Quang Ngai.

Business:

-- Vietnam's former banking mogul Nguyen Duc Kien, who was arrested in 2012 for violations of state regulations on economic management, will appear in a court in Hanoi today (April 16).

Politics:

-- Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on Tuesday received German Parliament’s Vice President Edelgard Bulmahn. Edelgard said the German Parliament always values its relations with Vietnam and helps the country develop ties with the European Union.

-- The 27th session of the Vietnamese National Assembly Standing Committee has a focus on revisions to the draft public security law on its second day (April 16).

-- Government Inspector General Huynh Phong Tranh discussed how Russian agencies fight corruption with the host officials during the second day of his visit to Russia, which began on April 14, according to the official Vietnam News Agency.
