Vietnam reviews Party building, national development at plenum

Monday, October 10, 2016, 11:44 GMT+7

Vietnam’s Party Central Committee kicked off its fourth plenary meeting on Sunday scheduled for October 9 to 15, with issues regarding Party building and the socio-economic situation included in the agenda, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

During his opening speech, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong stated that reviewing the Vietnamese Party and political system to resolve existing problems was one of the main objectives.

Efforts must be exerted to analyze and curb the deterioration in political ideology, morality and lifestyle along with the signs of “self-evolution” and “self-transformation” within the Party.

The Party chief ordered a comprehensive and objective evaluation of the current situation, and predictions for the opportunities and challenges in the country’s global integration and national protection over the next five to ten years.

Regarding the nation’s socio-economic situation, General Secretary Trong called for measures and policies to promptly address challenges and the negative effects of new international commitments on Vietnamese agriculture, farmers, and small businesses.

The liberalization of service markets, primarily in the fields of finance, telecommunications, the Internet and social media, will affect national defense-security and socio-political stability along the way, he continued.

According to the Vietnamese leader, the report and plan submitted to this plenum present an overview of the growth and economic restructuring in the country over recent years.

The documents point out seven outcomes, six shortcomings, three major causes and five lessons, providing a foundation for major policies on this issue in the near future.

Delegates at the plenum should clearly define a growth model that is different from the current one, one that the country should strive for, Trong said, adding that a roadmap for the next decade should be drafted, along with a vision toward 2030.

Focus should be directed to the policies that promote science and technology, improve the quality of workforces, effectively mobilize social resources, especially from the private economic sector, and resolve bad debt and weak commercial banks, the Party chief asserted.
