Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has called on the whole political system, agencies at all levels, and the public to join efforts to protect the country’s territorial sovereignty and border security.

>> Navy should step up efforts to safeguard sovereignty: President The appeal was made in PM Dung’s Directive 01 issued last Friday, in which the government leader requested the People’s Committees of border and coastal cities and provinces to coordinate with the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee and the Ministries of Defense and Public Security to organize a movement for the said purpose nationwide, according to the Vietnam News Agency. Each household and individual should voluntarily engage in the protection of territorial sovereignty and ensuring security and order in border areas, PM Dung said. He also urged the Ministry of Defense to direct the Border Guard, the Coast Guard, and the Navy to join hands with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in facilitating offshore fishing and providing rescue services in order to defend Vietnam’s sea and island sovereignty.

The premier has also assigned the Ministry of Information and Communications to work with the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs to devise regular and long-term plans to raise public awareness of the nation’s land and sea sovereignty via the media at home and abroad.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education and Training is required to cooperate with the Ministries of Defense and Public Security to include national territorial sovereignty protection in curricula at all educational levels.
