The Vietnamese-German University in the southern province of Binh Duong will be puffed up as part of the three projects to be carried out to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Germany in 2015, Hans-Dieter Stell, German Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, announced at a press conference on Tuesday.

At the conference on the occasion of German Unity Day (October 3), Consul General Stell said a plan to expand the university is under discussion, and is expected to be unveiled in six months.

The university was founded in March 2008 thanks to close cooperation between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the German State of Hessen, which was then broadened to German-wide cooperation, according to the school’s website.

Focusing on high-tech engineering and sustainable development, the higher education institution follows the German model and standards concerning its academic and administrative structure.

The Vietnamese-German University´s strategy is to import excellent German study programs, taken from the strongest engineering areas of Germany, and customize them to meet the needs of Vietnamese higher education, the school said on its website.

According to Consul General Stell, the Vietnamese-German University is now teaching around 750 students, a number which is expected to double by the end of this year.

The two other main projects are pushing the progress of the Ho Chi Minh City metro line 2, sponsored by Germany; and building the German House, located at the corner of Le Duan and Le Van Huu Streets in the city’s District 1.

Work on the 25-storey building will start this month, and it will become home to the German Consulate General and other German state agencies and enterprises upon completion.

“The German House is an example for the German quality,” Consul General Stell said at the press conference, adding that total capital for the work is around US$80 million, a figure which could rise during construction.

Together with these three major projects, a wide range of cultural and educational activities will also be held until the end of this year and next year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Germany.

A ceremony to commemorate German Unity Day will take place at the Caravelle Hotel in District 1 on Friday evening, promising to gather German food, music, and many people.

Vietnam and Germany established diplomatic relations on September 23, 1975.
