Hanoi airport blacks out for 18 minutes

Hanoi airport blacks out for 18 minutes

Thursday, June 09, 2016, 15:02 GMT+7

Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi experienced temporary electricity shutdown for 18 minutes on Wednesday afternoon.

The power outage, lasting from 2:50 pm to 3:08 pm, was attributed to a thunderstorm, Noi Bai’s head said, adding that the bad weather had disrupted two power sources in Soc Son District, the main electricity suppliers for the airport.

Many passengers claimed they were spending too much time in line at check-in counters, as the computer systems which print boarding passes had failed to operate.

“It is 3:25 pm now but there is still a long line of people before me,” L.Q.K., a passenger checking in to board Vietnam Airlines flight VN7221, said, adding that he queued at the counter at 2:55 pm.

Many claimed that the free Wi-Fi access point at the airport also shut down due to the electricity loss.

The airport’s backup power system was immediately activated, allowing the airport to resume normal operations.

The incident caused no recorded effects on flight schedules, flight management, or pre-boarding procedures, the airport’s head said, adding that no manual check-in procedures were performed as reported by some local news sites, according to Vu The Phiet, director of Noi Bai International Airport.

Some Vietnam Airlines check-in counters at Terminal T1 had problems with the power supply for 15 minutes, but the issues were quickly resolved.
