Vietnam orchestra invited to Asia Orchestra Week in Tokyo in October

Vietnam orchestra invited to Asia Orchestra Week in Tokyo in October

Tuesday, September 23, 2014, 19:11 GMT+7

The Ho Chi Minh City Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) has been invited to the 13th Asia Orchestra Week to be held in Tokyo from October 3 to 9.

The invitation makes the HBSO the first in Asia to attend the event twice so far. It partook in the annual Week for the first time in 2008.

In a press release on the HBSO’s September program, Saneyuki Yoshii, managing director of the Association of Japanese Symphony Orchestras, was cited as giving an explanation on why the troupe has been invited for the second time.

He said the Ho Chi Minh City orchestra has made great progress since its first time joining the Asia Orchestra Week even though it was established not long ago – in 1993.

That is the result the organizers of the Asia Orchestra Week have aimed at, he added.

The Ho Chi Minh City orchestra is expected to showcase works by world-renowned composers Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Ludwig van Beethoven, and famous Vietnamese composer Do Hong Quan through the performances of Vietnamese violin soloist Nguyen Huu Nguyen and other artists of the HBSO under the baton of local conductor Tran Vuong Thach.

Before leaving for Tokyo next month, the orchestra will hold a concert at 8:00 pm on September 29 at the Municipal Theater at 7 Lam Son Square in District 1 as part of its Youth Melody Program.

The concert will boast the performances to be given at the forthcoming Asia Orchestra Week in Japan.

Formed in the East Asian country in 2002, the Asia Orchestra Week is a festival for professional orchestras in Asia, intended to create opportunities for their exchanges and for them to display their artistic skills.

It has attracted many famed orchestras in the region, including Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Korean Symphony Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra were also invited to the event in 2004 and 2012, respectively.
