Scorching weather to keep hitting central Vietnam for next 10 days

Scorching weather to keep hitting central Vietnam for next 10 days

Friday, June 05, 2015, 16:19 GMT+7

The ongoing heat wave will ease a bit in northern Vietnam but it will still rage in the country’s central part in the next 10 days, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said on Friday. The prolonged hot spell is part of the impacts of the El Nino phenomenon, which has lasted since early May, the center said.  El Nino refers to the warming of the central to eastern tropical Pacific that occurs every two to seven years on average. Accordingly, the highest temperatures in the central region will range from 36 to 39 degrees Celsius in plain provinces and 40 to 41 degrees Celsius in mountainous provinces from June 6 to 15, the center said. On May 4, the highest temperature in the region was recorded at 41.6 degrees Celsius in Quy Hop District, Nghe An Province.

Meanwhile, the scorching weather will ease in provinces in the north in the next 10 days, with most of them seeing the highest temperatures of 34-38 degrees Celsius, except for some localities that can be hotter, at over 38 degrees Celsius. In Hanoi, the highest temperatures will be 33 and 37 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

In general, the Central Highlands and southern regions will have a lower range of maximum heat, at 32-34 degrees Celsius, except some southeastern provinces where the highest temperature will reach 35 degrees Celsius. The Central Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control on Thursday sent a message to its local units in the northern and central regions and to agencies concerned, urging them to try their utmost to cope with the prolonged heat wave. Tightly controlling existing water resources is required to prevent a shortage of water for daily life and production in provinces that are suffering the scorching weather, the committee said. It is necessary to closely follow updated information on weather conditions and forecasts to take measures to deal with adverse circumstances timely and effectively, the committee added. The Ministry of Education and Training has asked its local units in northern and central provinces to inspect equipment and facilities at all schools, especially those in mountainous and disadvantageous areas, to make sure they have enough means to protect the health of their students during the burning weather. Following the inspection, local education and training departments must take action to support needy schools, the ministry said.
