Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has ordered an urgent investigation to be launched into the death of a teenage girl, who killed herself after no probe was conducted into her accusation of multiple rapes by a neighbor.

The premier has tasked the Ministry of Public Security with working with police in the southernmost province of Ca Mau to bring justice to the girl, 13-year-old H.M.K, the Government Office said in a statement on Friday.

The decision came after several media reports questioning the way Ca Mau police handled the alleged rape of K. in late 2016, according to the document.

In September 2016, the family of K. lodged a complaint to Ca Mau police, accusing a neighbor named B. of raping their daughter several times.

Police accepted the complaint but concluded in December the same year that no investigation would be launched into the alleged rape as there was no evidence, other than K.’s denouncement, that B. had raped the young girl.

On February 10, 2017, K. killed herself by taking various medicines, leaving a suicide note saying she “could not rest in peace so long as my case remains unresolved.”

In the two-page note, K. also recounted how she was lured and raped by the old neighbor, who often came to join her grandfather in drinking parties at her house.

K. had previously told her mother that she was too ashamed to continue living, upon learning that her alleged rape would not be investigated.

While the mother has since been in grave grief over her daughter’s death, the grandfather now regrets having not taken the girl’s words for serious consideration.

K. had repeatedly denounced B. in front of her grandpa whenever the men began a drinking party, only to be scolded for having improper behaviors with the elders.

PM Phuc has demanded that the public security ministry and Ca Mau administration task relevant agencies with speeding up investigation to handle into the case as per the law.

The premier also requested reviewing the responsibility of Ca Mau police for not starting an investigation into the alleged rape in the first place, leading to the victim’s suicide.

The said agencies are required to report to the premier by the end of this month.
