Wrong-way driver crashes multiple cars in Saigon River Tunnel

Wrong-way driver crashes multiple cars in Saigon River Tunnel

Saturday, June 24, 2017, 09:27 GMT+7

An apparently drunk driver sped through the Saigon River Tunnel in Ho Chi Minh City and crashed into three other cars on Thursday night, the tunnel management center said Friday.

All of the four cars involved in the serial crash were severely damaged but no drivers were injured, according to Le Minh Triet, director of the center.

According to CCTV footage, the four-seater car was heading from District 1 to the Hanoi Highway through the tunnel, the only of its kind to cross a river in Vietnam, in the wrong direction before smashing three other vehicles when reaching the middle of the passageway.

All car lanes of the tunnel were blocked for an hour to resolve the accident.

The driver was identified as 49-year-old Nguyen Van Sang, hailing from the central province of Quang Nam, according to VnExpress.

He was pulled out from the damaged car under an intoxicated state and was rushed to the hospital.

Sang had previously committed several traffic offences, according to the police record.

Triet said the reckless driving of Sang is extremely dangerous for the tunnel traffic and called on police to decide a strict punishment for the driver.

“The case should be criminally charged to set an example for other thoughtless drivers,” he was quoted by VnExpress as saying.

Inaugurated in 2011, the Saigon River Tunnel is one of the most modern such facility in Southeast Asia, running 1.49km across the namesake river, with six lanes and a speed limit of 60kph.

Since its opening to traffic, the tunnel has witnessed dozens of accidents, including a fatal incident in April 2016 when one sanitation worker was crushed to death by a truck inside the passageway.
