The Ministry of Public Security has indicted a 35-year-old Vietnamese woman after she was caught illegally carrying over 100 bags containing 2.15kg of jewelry made of gold alloys, worth US$54,000, from Hong Kong to Vietnam without any declaration last year.   

>> Thai woman caught with 1.73 kg of cocaine at HCMC airport After months of investigation, the ministry’s investigative agency on Thursday charged Tran Thi My Hanh, a resident in Hanoi’s Hoang Mai District, with “illegal cross-border transportation of goods and/or currencies,” pursuant to Article 154 of the Penal Code. Hanh is now freed on bail but is banned from leaving her residence, police said. Police said that Hanh, accompanied by another woman, flew from Hong Kong to Noi Bai International Airport in the Vietnamese capital city on December 2, 2013. 

At the terminal, customs officers checked the handbags of the two women and found a total of 107 small bags containing jewelry items made of yellow and white metal. The total weight of these items was about 2.15kg.    Both women had not listed them in their luggage declarations. The valuables were later proved to be owned by Hanh, but she failed to show any documents specifying their origin. Tests on samples of these jewelry pieces showed that they are all gold alloys. The total value was estimated at VND1.146 billion ($54,000), police said.
