Citizens of Ho Chi Minh City have been encouraged to wear ‘ao dai,’ the traditional long gown of Vietnam, ahead of a citywide festival organized to honor the costume.

The municipal administration on Monday announced that it had approved a plan to hold the fourth edition of the city’s annual ‘ao dai’ festival, which is to be organized in March by the Department of Tourism, the Vietnamese Women’s Association in Ho Chi Minh City and other relevant agencies.

The 2017 ‘ao dai’ festival is scheduled to take place from March 3 to 17, featuring multiple activities in many locations throughout the southern metropolis.

A three-day exhibition under the theme ‘Ho Chi Minh City – The City of Ao Dai’ is slated to be held from March 3 to 5 at Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street in District 1, showcasing the evolution of the gown over the years.

Visitors can have their own ‘ao dai’ tailored at the exhibition, while enjoying live performances of traditional musical instruments and ‘ao dai’ dances.

Participants will have the chance to pose for photos in the Vietnamese dress available in a photo marathon at the pedestrian street.

Those who cannot attend the festival may submit photos of themselves wearing ‘ao dai’ to the contest via an online platform, the organizers said.

A program honoring the international value of the gown will feature foreign diplomats, consuls general, ambassadors and their family members in the traditional ‘ao dai.’

The biggest ‘ao dai’ festival ever held by the city, the event is expected to attract tens of thousands of participants over the course of two weeks.

In celebration of the festival, the city is looking to encourage locals to wear ‘ao dai’ at work and school.

The administration has tasked the municipal Department of Culture and Sports with brainstorming ideas to encourage schoolgirls, undergraduates, public workers and city officials to wear the gown for one or two days a week.
