The pyrotechnic team from Italy enthralled spectators and judges alike on the finale night of the 2017 Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) on Saturday to take home the highest title of the two-month competition.

Australia and the UK came second and third respectively in the three-country finale in the central Vietnamese city.

This year’s DIFF, in its ninth installment, attracted eight teams from the UK, Australia, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, China, and Vietnam.

The event, themed ‘Toa Sang Ngu Hanh Son’ (‘Shining Ngu Hanh Mountain’), opened on April 29 on the floating stage on the city’s iconic Han River.

Over the two-month course of the festival, which ran from April 29 to June 24, five nights dedicated to the five elements (ngu hanh) of Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood featured spectacular pyrotechnic displays by the international teams.

Teams from Italy, Australia and the UK were selected to compete in Saturday’s finale for the highest title.

With their masterful incorporation of romanticism and sophistication into one captivating performance, accompanied by classical orchestral music, Italy was crowned the night’s champion to the roaring applause from spectators.

The Australian team, which won the first prize in 2015, was announced the runner-up while the UK came third with their melodic performance that used a wide range of music genres, from pop, ballad, rock to classical.

First launched in 2008 as the Da Nang International Fireworks Competition (DIFC), the annual event has just returned this year after a one-year hiatus in 2016.
