A Chinese-owned textile company in Vietnam has been fined VND672 million (US$30,000) for dumping undertreated wastewater into the environment.

The factory of Pacific Crystal Textile Limited, located in the northern province of Hai Duong, was found discharging wastewater that had five indicators exceeding Vietnam’s quality standards.

The provincial administration on Sunday imposed an administrative penalty on the Chinese firm, located at Lai Vu Industrial Zone in Kim Thanh District, for its environmental protection violations.

The company’s wastewater was found to have surpassed readings in the five indicators of pH, color, total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand and biological oxygen demand.

Its Hai Duong factory discharges between 1,500 cubic meters and 2,000 cubic meters of wastewater a day, according to the announcement accompanying the penalty.

Hai Duong’s administration has demanded that the company strictly follow its previously approved environmental impact assessment report and review its wastewater treatment system to make sure Vietnam’s environmental standards are met.

The company is also asked to submit relevant documents proving its completion of such environmental protection obligations before March to be approved for operation.

Hai Duong Province has asked for close coordination between the company and Lai Vu Industrial Zone, where it is located, to clean the zone’s drainage channels that had been contaminated by the wastewater.

Pacific Crystal Textile Limited produces and sells woven fabrics as well as other textile products and accessories, according to Kim Thanh District officials.
