Police in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang said Sunday that they had arrested one day earlier two men who are suspected of killing one family member and seriously injuring two others in a break-in in Phu Quoc District late last month.
The two suspects are Le Thanh Nam, 49, and Ho Huu Hieu, 33, both of whom are local residents.
Preliminary investigation results allege that Nam asked Hieu to join him in robbing the house of Nguyen Thi Phi, a 32-year-old woman, in the small hours of September 25 after stalking her from her father’s home on the previous night.
The two then broke into Phi’s house, covering her with a blanket to beat and stab the victim with knifes and a wooden bar until she lapsed into unconsciousness.
The burglars then attacked Phi’s sons Nguyen Tri Cuong, 9, and Nguyen Tri Dai, 6, who were woken up by the stabbing, as they were shouting for help.
They took one necklace, two rings, one bracelet, and other pieces of jewelry, which are all worth more than 4 taels of gold (or 150 grams).
It was dark, and raining cats and dogs at the time of the burglary so the neighbors of the woman, whose husband was going fishing then, did not know about it.
Phi regained consciousness at 6:00 in the morning and phoned her sister-in-law living opposite. The in-law called an ambulance and the police then.
Dai survived while his brother died on the way to the hospital.
