-- Vietnam advocates peaceful nuclear energy development and commits itself to ensure nuclear security and safety together with non-proliferation, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said Wednesday at a reception for director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency Yukiya Amano in Hanoi, the official Vietnam News Agency reported.

-- Premier Nguyen Tan Dung will visit Cambodia from January 12 to 14 at the invitation of his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

-- Hanoi authorities have scrapped a project to build 14 restrooms at a cost of VND15 billion (US$714,000).

-- Ho Chi Minh City police found out Wednesday that 90 percent of the contents of ten containers they had seized on December 30 last year are contraband goods, a Tuoi Tre report said.

-- Over 100 residents surrounded Wednesday a hydropower plant in central Vietnam to demand compensation from its operator, which they claimed had damaged their houses when it was developing the facility.

-- Ho Chi Minh City customs officials said Wednesday they had seized 2kg of drugs at Tan Son Nhat International Airport. The value was estimated at VND2 billion ($95,000)

-- Vietnam’s exports to Algeria topped $150 million in revenue last year, official figures show.  

-- A new five-star hotel, Pullman Saigon Center, was put into operation in downtown Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday. Built at a cost of over $80 million, the hotel boasts 30 floors and 306 rooms.

-- Vinatex, a state-owned textile group, logged trade surplus worth more than $1.7 billion last year, the company said Wednesday.  

-- A firm in the southern province of An Giang is being investigated for tax fraud related to the export of TV sets and mobile phones to Cambodia, local customs officials said Wednesday.

-- Four Vietnamese singers Bang Kieu, Hong Nhung, Le Hieu, and Phuong Vy will perform in a concert to celebrate the spring festival in Singapore on Saturday.

-- Vietnamese tennis player Ly Hoang Nam made it to the third round of the men’s singles event at the 50th Coffee Bowl championship, currently hosted by Costa Rica, after beating his American rival Levine Robert 2-0 (6-1, 6-3) on Wednesday (Vietnam time).  

-- Vietnam were humiliated in a 0-7 loss to Japan at a friendly football competition for under-19 players, held in Ho Chi Minh City, on Wednesday. The hosts were already defeated 1-2 by AS Roma in their opener on Monday. The Vietnamese will take on Tottenham Hotspur on Friday in their last game.
