Below are some of the main stories published today, August 24, in the Vietnamese press.Politics -- A National Assembly delegation led by Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung on Friday visited General Vo Nguyen Giap on the occasion of his 102nd birthday (August 25) at Central Military Hospital 108 in Hanoi. Chairman Hung gave his best regards to the General, informing him of the NA’s renewal achievements and recent public poll on the draft amendments to the 1992 Constitution. The Chairman requested the hospital’s doctors and medical staff to continue caring for the General in order to improve his health.Society -- The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court has sentenced 24-year-man Cao Trung Lap to death for charges of murder, robbery, and intentional assault. Lap killed a young man, Hoang Ngoc Tri, and injured three other when he attacked Tri in an attempt to take away a backpack from him on when Tri was carrying his girlfriend on a motorbike on Cong Hoa Street in Tan Binh District on September 17, 2012. -- Concerned agencies at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport have uncovered a case in which four Vietnamese were sent abroad illegally. They carried procedures to fly to Thailand on July 25 but they later, with the aid of some individuals, managed to get aboard a flight to Italia, where local authorities sent them back to Vietnam after finding them holding no valid papers.

-- The Pharmaceutical Management Department confirmed that it has not granted circulation licenses Bethel 30, Bethel Advance and Quick Thin, three pharmaceutical products that are being recalled in the US after they were found containing sibutramine and  phenolphtalein, which are harmful for heart health. They were prepared by Bethel Nutritional Consulting, Inc based on New York, US and are advertised to have effects to help reduce body weight, stabilize the prostate's functions, lower cholesterol, and boost vitality. -- At a seminar on the Bill on Dwelling Houses and the proposed amendments to the Law on Real Estate Trade, Vu Van Phan, deputy head of the Construction Ministry’s Depatment of Houses and Real Estate Market Management, suggested that there should be a regulation on combating money laundering in real estate business. Such a regulation is necessary sine many money laundering cases have recently been detected in Vietnam. -- Ministry of Public Security’s Road and Railway Traffic Department has issued a document to cancel a content of a regulation issued on April 26, 2013 that requires that anyone who want to take photograph of or videotaped police officers on duty must get prior consents of the officers involved. The cancellation was made after the regulation faced strong objection from media and public since it was unlawful.Business --  The Russian Trade Representative Office in Vietnam opened a branch in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday, August 23, as an effort to further trade and investment between the two countries. According to Russian Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federtion A. E. Likhachev, two-way trade has increased fourfold with average annual growth of nearly 30 percent during the 2007-2012 period. The two Governments have set a bilateral turnover target of 7 billion USD by 2015. -- Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier in Vietnam, announced that it will put all its shares and debentures at Techcombank to an auction sale as of Septmeber 26.  As one of the founding shareholders of Techcombank, VNA once hold 20 percent of Techcombank’s charter capital, but since late 2011, its stake in the bank has sharply reduced to only 2.7 percent, or about 24 million shares.Sports -- Vietnamese tennis player Ly Hoang Nam won the single men championship at the Asian Youth Games' tennis event in Nanjing, China, after defeating his rival Filipino Mendoza Zosimo 2-1. Nam is ranked 142nd on the world junior table, while Zosimo is No 89. Nam earlier grabbed a berth in the final match of the boys' event after beating Dmitry Popko of Kazakhstan 7-5, 7-6 (3) in the semi-finals. With the victory, Nam has become the first Vietnamese to win a gold medal at an Asian tennis tournament.
