The Vietnamese cinema department and Ho Chi Minh City tourism will team up in an event to promote the city’s tourism and Vietnam’s film industry during the upcoming 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

The promotion program will be jointly launched by the Vietnam Cinema Department and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, the organizers announced at a press meeting on Tuesday.

The promotional activities include hanging three large banners to introduce the Vietnamese film industry and the tourism appeal of Ho Chi Minh City during the 70th annual Cannes festival, scheduled to be held from May 17 to 28.

One poster will feature the most impressive photos of Son Doong Cave in central Vietnam, one of the settings for the 2017 Hollywood blockbuster Kong: Skull Island, communicating Vietnam as a great destination for international filmmakers.

The other two will promote tourism in the southern Vietnamese metropolis.

All three will be located in front of the Majestic Hotel, which normally accommodates hundreds of Hollywood directors and actors during the festival.

Ly Nha Ky, the ambassador for Vietnamese tourism during 2011 and 2012, told reporters at Tuesday’s meeting that she will sponsor three banquets on the sidelines of the festival, allowing international investors, film producers and entrepreneurs to meet with members of Vietnam’s cinema industry.

The Vietnam Cinema Department will also set up an information booth at Cannes to seek investment and cooperation from global partners.

“We will also hold a special event called ‘Vietnam Night’ at Cannes on May 20 to showcase the latest movies from Vietnam,” department head Ngo Phuong Lan said.

The Vietnam Cinema Department and France's national cinema centre are also slated to sign a cooperation agreement on several projects during the ‘Vietnam Night’, Lan added.

Vietnam will have two movies, Culi Never Cries by Pham Ngoc Lan, and Taste by Le Bao, selected among 15 entries for The Cinefondation’s Atelier, a Cannes competition that looks to stimulate creative filmmaking and encourage the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers.
