-- The Vietnamese National Assembly Office on January 14 ran a training course on leadership skills for 40 students selected from several universities in the capital city of Hanoi. The course is within the framework of a project sponsored by the British Embassy to provide political skills for students.

-- On January 14, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung welcomed General Prawit Wongsuwon, Thai Deputy PM and Defense Minister, in Hanoi. At their meeting, the Vietnamese premier expressed his delight at the development of the two countries’ friendly relationship and strategic partnership.

-- Flight VN1203 of national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines from Hanoi to Can Tho on January 14 made an emergency landing to provide first aid to a two-year-old Chinese child who had contracted a high fever and developed convulsions.

-- The Ministry of Construction, the People’s Committee of the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, and related agencies have agreed to establish a commission to comprehensively investigate the collapse of a tunnel at the Da Dang-Dachomo hydropower plant in Lac Duong District, Lam Dong. The collapse occurred on December 16, 2014, trapping 12 workers for several days before they were rescued safely on December 19.

-- Though roads leading to Ho Chi Minh City, especially its southern and southwestern regions, have been expanded, serious traffic jams still often occur during rush hour.

Business

-- The Ministry of Industry and Trade has recently ratified a national trade promotion program for 2015, including 212 projects from 70 units with a total expenditure of VND100 billion (US$4.66 million).

-- The multimodal transport fee in Vietnam is too high, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has said in a report to the Prime Minister on the development of the country’s logistic services. The transport fee for a container over a roughly 100km distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Cai Mep, Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province, is about $210, while that for freight shipment from Vietnam to Thailand is just $110.

Lifestyle

-- Three international artists, including Filipino conductor Olivier Ochaine, soprano singer Rachelle Gerodias and Korean baritone Byeong In Park, will perform in a show of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra. The concert will take place at 8:00 pm on January 15 and 16 at the Hanoi Opera House.
