Politics --  During their meeting on Friday in Hanoi, President Truong Tan Sang and visiting Malaysian Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah agreed on stronger cooperation in national defense-security, labour, oil and gas, education-training, farming and aquaculture.  President Sang hailed Malaysia as one of Vietnam’s top trading partners and investors. He promised all possible support for Malaysian firms to do business in the country. The host suggested the two sides continue giving mutual support at regional and international forums.

Society --  The Ho Chi Minh City-based Apollo General Clinic, which has recently been caught employing Chinese health workers illegally, yesterday was fined VND89.2 million (US$4,200) and had its business license revoked for 12 months for committing many violations, including offering unlicensed medical services, using unregistered medicine, misleading customers on its capabilities, and employing health workers without practitioner’s certificates. -- One passenger died and many others were injured when a bus carrying 28 passengers fell into a lake after colliding with a 4-seat car on  the expressway Phap Van-Cau Gie in Hanoi on Friday afternoon. -- Police in southern Dong Nai province on Friday said they have arrested two suspects in the killing of Nguyen Hieu Hoc, the owner of a jewelry shop in Trang Bom District. Nguyen Van Long, 21, and Pham Ngoc An, 22, who were arrested at a hotel in Ha Long City, northern Quang Ninh  Province, pleaded guilty to the crime.  -- Yesterday afternoon many areas in HCMC, especially District 2 and 7, were hit by torrential rains and whirlwinds that blew off roofs of many houses, uprooted a lot of trees, and knocked down many electric poles causing a power cut in many areas. Fallen branches and uprooted trees blocked traffic on many routes.   -- The northern Vinh Phuc Province People’s Court yesterday sentenced to death to 21-year-old Phung Manh Tuan, the leader of a group of thugs who beat 27-year-old Nguyen Tuan Anh to death and then threw the victim’s body into a river on March 14, 2013, only because of personal conflicts. -- At 1 am on Friday, a night-watchman in Thanh Lock Ward, District 12 rescued a 27-year-old woman who had jumped off the Phu Long Bridge into the Saigon River in an attempt to kill herself. The woman left her 3-year-old girl on the bridge before jumping into the river, the rescuer said.   Business -- Russia’s GazpromNeft group has suggested that it can buy 36 percent of the shares of the Dung Quat Oil Refinery Plant in central Quang Ngai Province in a move to help increase the plant’s capacity from 6.5 million tons of oil per year to 10 million tons per year, the plant reported, adding that the Ministry of Planning and Investment has welcomed and approved the group’s suggestion.     -- The first phase of the project to build the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) in Quang Ngai province, the fifth VSIP in Vietnam, will be started soon with a total cost of US$125 million, the authorities said, adding that the project’s investor is the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park Joint Venture Co Ltd.Lifestyle -- After four years of construction at cost of VND62 billion ($3 million), the Con Dao Museum was inaugurated in the Con Dao island district, southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province on Friday. With about 2,000 exhibits are on display including images, artifacts and documents which feature four topics: Con Dao’s nature and its people; The hell on earth, The front line and school; and Today’s Con Dao, the museum is expected to raise awareness of local people and tourists of heroic sacrifice of Vietnam soldiers on this island during the struggle for national independence.Sports -- Top Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh, who is ranked 5th in the world, defeated his 169th ranked Khosit Phetpradab of Thailand 2-1 (21-9, 21-10) in the quarterfinals of the YONEX Chinese Taipei Open in Taiwan on Friday afternoon. Minh will face home favourite Hsu Jen Hao, who toppled third seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark 21-10, 21-16, for a place in the final.
