Vietnam comes third with 4 gold medals at Int’l Mathematical Olympiad

Vietnam has ranked third out of 112 participating countries and territories at the 2017 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Brazil, with a haul of gold medals.

All six members of Team Vietnam were awarded medals at the competition, including four golds.

The result marked Vietnam’s highest achievement at an IMO in its 43-year history of participating in the event, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training.

The Vietnamese high school seniors scored 155 in the six-problem test, the third-highest result after South Korea (170) and China (159).

The U.S. came fourth with 148 points, followed by Iran with 142 points.

Hoang Huu Quoc Huy, a student from Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, got the highest individual score at the Olympiad, sharing his first place with two other competitors from Iran and Japan, scoring 35 points each.

Overall, Vietnam bagged four gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal at the 2017 IMO.

Gold medals went to participants who scored 25 points or more out of the maximum 42, while silver and bronze medals were awarded to those who scored from 19 and 16 points, respectively.

Over 600 high school students from 112 countries and territories took part in the 58th edition of the friendly competition, held in Rio de Janeiro from July 12 to 23.

It was the first time the mathematical Olympiad had been hosted by Brazil.

First held in Romania in 1959, the IMO has provided a stimulus for mathematical education across the globe, offering an opportunity for the creative exchange of ideas and experiences among international students.

Vietnam first entered the competition in 1974, and has ranked third by country three times – in 1999, 2007 and 2017.

However, this year’s competition marked the Southeast Asian nation’s best-ever result since it was the first time Vietnam had ranked third with four gold medals.

The only other time Vietnam had snatched four gold medals was at the 2004 IMO in Athens, Greece, but at the time it only came fourth.
