-- Vietnam's Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is scheduled to begin his official August 22-24 visit to Indonesia today, with the trip aimed to strengthen political trust, consolidate friendship and boost cooperation between the two countries.

Society

-- The maiden river-bus service in Ho Chi Minh City, linking the Bach Dang Wharf on the Saigon River with Linh Dong Ward in Thu Duc District with seven stops, entered a technical run on Monday and is slated to officially start operations in October.

-- A tunnel system running through the Ca Pass, connecting Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa Provinces in south-central Vietnam, was opened to traffic on Monday, cutting the time to travel through the mountain pass to ten minutes from 60 minutes.

-- Multiple financial wrongdoings collectively worth more than VND2 trillion (US$88.11 million) have been found at six BOT (build-operate-transfer) traffic infrastructure projects in Ho Chi Minh City, the State Inspectorate of Vietnam said on Monday.

-- A one-kilometer stretch on the Phu Loc River in the central city of Da Nang was filled with dead fish that smelled badly on Monday, with relevant agencies working to verify the cause of the mass fish deaths.

-- Do Trung Hieu, one of the six Vietnamese sailors of the Royal 16 ship abducted off the Philippine island of Sibagu of Basilan in November 2016, has been rescued by the Philippines’ competent agencies, the Consular Department under Vietnam’s foreign ministry announced on Monday.

Business

-- Saigon One Tower, a high-rise building in central Ho Chi Minh City that broke ground in 2007 but has never completed construction, has been held by the Vietnam Asset Management Company as seized collateral after its developer fails to clear nonperforming debts worth VND7 trillion ($308.37 million).

-- Coca-Cola Vietnam announced on Monday it has finished a $300 million expansion project, which started in 2013, at its facility in the central city of Da Nang.

Sports

-- Vietnam will face Indonesia in the decisive clash for the first semifinal ticket of Group B in the men’s football tournament at the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia at 7:45 pm tonight, August 22.

-- Vietnam ended Monday's competition at the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia with four more gold medals from wushu, cycling, fencing and swimming, standing third on the medal tally with 22 medals of all kinds.
