Vietnamese Australian awarded for teaching martial arts in adopted homeland

Dang Cong Hung, a Vietnamese-born, Australian forensic pathologist, is a beloved teacher of martial arts and the Vietnamese language in his adopted homeland of Australia.

Though he works for the Australian army as a forensic pathologist, Hung is an expert in multiple martial arts including Vovinam, Karate, Taekwondo, and Kendo.

Immigrating to Australia with his family at the age of seven, Hung began learning Vovinam, a Vietnamese martial art, to protect himself from being bullied by his bigger and stronger classmates.

Hung chose Vovinam because his father had practiced it, and because it was actually quite popular in Melbourne at the time.

After achieving the instructor-level third-degree yellow belt in Vovinam, Hung turned his attention to other martial arts including Karate, Taekwondo, Kendo, and Wing Chu.

Hung currently holds a sixth-degree black belt in Kyokushinkai Karate and a fourth-degree black belt in Suzucho Karate, both distinctive styles of the popular martial art.

He has also achieved a sixth-degree black belt in both Taekwondo and Kendo.

In April, Hung opened his own martial arts training center in Australia, specializing in Suzucho Karate.

He has around 50 students, aged from five to 82 years old, who take various classes at his center.

Hung charges students AU$10 (US$8) per session, which is enough to cover the building’s rent.

For students born in Australia and who may have lost their Vietnamese mother tongue, Hung also patiently teaches them basic Vietnamese so they can understand more about their origin and culture.

Besides teaching martial arts and Vietnamese, the instructor also hands down his own moral code, advising his students never to use their skills to fight with others.

On October 5 Hung received an honorable red belt from the Nam Anh Kung Fu Center in Ho Chi Minh City for his contributions to martial arts.

Dang Cong Hung was born in 1974 in Long An Province, Vietnam.

In 1991, he enrolled in the Australian army and served as a forensic pathologist.

He also holds a bachelor’s degree in literature.

He was taught by Jin Yong, the famed Chinese novelist whose works have become known worldwide and translated into various languages.
