-- In the last two days, many areas in Ho Chi Minh City have been covered with around one meter of water due to a torrential rain that began late Tuesday afternoon, while the city’s drainage system can only withstand a rainfall total of 76-96mm. The Ho Chi Minh City Steering Center of the Urban Flood Control Program said many facilities are being built in District 8, District 9, District 12, Binh Tan District and Thu Duc District, which have suffered serious flooding after heavy rains.  

-- Seven crew members of the Bth 98595 TS ship from the south-central province of Binh Thuan have been rescued after their vessel was rammed by a foreign ship – the Panama Grace Bridge – on September 15. The Vietnamese ship is being taken to shore by a fishing boat and is scheduled to reach the mainland on Friday morning.

-- More than 20,000 households in Ho Chi Minh City have donated their land to social projects since 2010, Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, deputy secretary of the municipal Party Committee, said in a conference on Wednesday.

-- Seven deepwater container terminals at the Cai Mep – Thi Vai Port in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, with an investment of around VND40 trillion (US$1.79 billion) have been put into operation for years. However, the number of containers transported through the port has only reached nearly 20 percent of its designed capacity.

-- Although the Mid-Autumn Festival is ten days away, many moon cake retail outlets in Ho Chi Minh City have offered deep discounts on purchases.

Lifestyle

-- Authorities in Cai Rang District in the southern city of Can Tho are discussing solutions, including the organization of festivals, for developing the Cai Rang Floating Market into one of the city’s most famous destinations to attract tourists. The venue receives around 500-700 visitors each day.

-- An old book fair featuring thousands of book titles published tens of years ago will be organized in Ho Chi Minh City from September 18 to 20. The event will also include an auction of rare and precious tomes to raise funds for a local foundation dedicated to audio books for the blind.

-- The Russian Film Week will take place in Hanoi and Da Nang from September 17 to 23, showing four famous movies made by Russian filmmakers for free.

Education

-- An event titled “English Camp 2015” aiming to improve local students’ English skills will be held by the Ho Chi Minh City Student Association in collaboration with the International Education Institute under the Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City at the beginning of October.
