Vietnam and Cambodia have pledged to deepen cooperation in joint sea patrol to solve maritime disputes as well as foster their friendship.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the two sides in a conference on joint marine patrol, which was organized by the 5th Regional Command under the Vietnam People’s Navy and a delegation from the Royal Cambodian Navy, in the southern province of Kien Giang.

The conference was meant to review ten years of implementing their joint patrol regulations and establishing information channels between the two countries.

The event was also an opportunity for the two nations to exchange information on security of territorial waters, to evaluate the results of their previous joint patrols as well as to set up new goals for the future.

Vietnam and Cambodia have effectively planned and carried out 40 joint patrols which helped ensure security in the region and solve emerging disputes, especially between fishermen, including fishing ground competition and sovereignty violation, according to reports presented at the conference.

The two countries will support each other in terms of cooperation and consultation to strengthen diplomatic ties, and will thus better cope with any maritime problems, said Rear Admiral Doan Van So, Commander of the 5th Regional Command.

Vietnam and Cambodia will also work together to carry out search and rescue activities in the waters of both nations, he added.
