Director, tour guide involved in deaths of UK tourists at Vietnam waterfall out on bail

The director of the travel firm that organized the package for three British tourists who died in a waterfall accident in Vietnam’s Central Highlands on Friday, and the tour guide who took them there, have been out on bail, police said Saturday.

Pham Huu Hoai Nguyen, 31, director of Dam Me Da Lat Co. Ltd., and his employee, Dang Van Sy, 26, were allowed home on Friday night, after working for hours with police in Lam Dong Province shortly after the tragedy.

With investigation still underway, the two were summoned to continue working with police on Saturday morning, when the bodies of the deceased tourists have been taken back to Ho Chi Minh City.

The incident occurred at the Dalanta waterfall, a popular adventure spot in Da Lat, the capital city of Lam Dong.

The victims have been identified as Chistian T. S., Beth G. A. and Isoben M., Lam Dong police said on Saturday.

Beth G. A. had her face injured, whereas Isoben M. had her face severely bruised and broke her right leg and arm, according to initial autopsy results. Chistian T. S. also had a deep cut on his forehead.

Police therefore said all of them might have died of brain injuries, apparently after having their heads hit the rocks. Suffocation is ruled out as a cause of death, according to officers.

The three allegedly slid into a dangerous whirlpool on the stream at the upper part of the Datanla waterfall around noon on Friday, according to the tour guide.

They booked a Da Lat tour with Da Lat Dam Me.

The company that operates the Datanla tourist area said the deceased tourists had not bought the ticket for the adventure activities, so they were not given the proper safety equipment.
