Vietnam premier to attend ASEAN-US Summit next week

Sunday, February 14, 2016, 10:24 GMT+7

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will attend the ASEAN-U.S. Summit on Monday in California at the invitation of President Barack Obama.

PM Dung will lead a delegation of elite officials to partake in the event scheduled for February 15 to 16 in Sunnylands, the Vietnam Government Portal reported.

The ASEAN-U.S. Summit is of great significance, as it is the first important international meeting of 2016 as well as the first summit convened by ASEAN and its partner nation since the establishment of the ASEAN Community last year.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a 10-member organization, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The gathering is slated to address the orientations and measures to realize the strategic partnership between ASEAN and the U.S. while discussing the international and regional issues capturing the attention of the two sides.

Several sessions will be conducted within the framework of the summit to confer on various topics, including economics and trade, politics and security, maritime safety, anti-terrorism, and a regional strategic outlook, the Vietnam Government Portal said, citing the agenda.

Both parties are expected to issue a joint statement to announce the results of the discussions carried out during the event.

The delegation led by PM Dung will highlight the active contribution and responsibility of Vietnam in ASEAN as well as its efforts to strengthen the ASEAN-U.S. partnership.

The participation of the Southeast Asian country is also meant to cement the cooperation between Vietnam and the U.S. in security and defense, science and technology, economic development, foreign investment, and the implementation of free trade agreements, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The TPP deal, which aims to liberalize commerce in 40 percent of the world's economy, was reached on October 5, 2015 following five years of negotiations between 12 countries, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the U.S. and Vietnam.

The ASEAN- U.S. dialogue relation was established in 1997 and the two parties’ enhanced partnership was adopted in 2005.

Their leaders announced the elevation of the ASEAN-U.S. dialogue rapport to a strategic level at the 3rd ASEAN-U.S. Summit, which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on November 21 last year.
