One of the youths, Huynh Kim Bao, 19, was killed on the spot.

The other two young men, Pham Nguyen Quoc Huu, 19, and Nguyen Minh Phuong, 18, died later in the hospital.

At the time of the incident, Bao was driving a scooter carrying Huu and Phuong. They were chasing after four dog thieves who were driving two motorbikes at a high speed, witnesses told police.

When Bao got close to the group of thieves, one of the two young men sitting behind Bao brandished a long knife at the dog thieves.

The youths’ motorbike suddenly crashed into the wall of a house on the street. The dog thieves escaped.    The crash killed Bao on the spot. Local residents took Huu and Phuong to a hospital, where they died later that day.

“After hearing a loud noise from outside a house on the street, I rushed to the scene and found a young man dead and two others seriously injured. Their scooter was stuck between the wall of the house and an electric post,” said Nguyen Ngoc Duc, a witness who lives near the scene.

Police seized the scooter of the victims and three 60-cm-long knives from the scene for investigation.

All three men suffered multiple injuries, including cranial traumatism, according to the forensic examination reports, police said.

Notably, there were wounds on Bao’s forehead and on Phuong’s right arm that doctors said could have been caused by a stun gun.

Lieutenant Colonel Phan Van Triet, head of the police of Tan Thanh Dong Commune, said that investigators have discovered some clues of the case and are hunting for the dog thieves.

“This is an extremely serious case. We are coordinating with the city police to trace the culprits,” said Lieutenant Colonel Tra Van Hon, head of Cu Chi District Police’s investigation agency.
