-- The Vietnam-Singapore Friendship Association in Ho Chi Minh City and the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations on Monday held a meeting to mark the 52nd anniversary of Singapore’s Independence Day (August 9).

-- Vietnam hopes to continue receiving support from the UN Environment Programme to review, revise and complete laws and policies related to the environment, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said as he received the program’s Director Erik Solheim in Hanoi on Monday.

-- Trinh Xuan Thanh, an ex-oil chief who turned himself in to the police last week after hiding overseas for nearly a year to evade an arrest warrant, has been taken into custody on charges of  “intentionally violating state regulations on economic management that caused severe consequences.”

-- Pham Le Hoang Uyen, a reporter who works for the Huong Nghiep Va Hoa Nhap (Orientation and Integration) magazine, was caught red handed on Monday receiving VND280 million ($12,330) in cash from a local business in the southern city of Can Tho in an apparent extortion case.

-- Animal crossing is posing extreme danger for drivers passing the Da Nang - Quang Nam expressway, which was opened to traffic earlier this month.

-- Doan Ngoc Hai, deputy chairman of District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, led a fresh crackdown in his signature ‘sidewalk clearing’ campaign after a four-month hiatus on Monday night.

-- Floods have killed 26 people and washed away hundreds of homes in northern Vietnam over the past week, causing damage estimated at more than VND940 billion ($41 million), the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said on Monday.        

-- Police in the north-central province of Nghe An said on Monday they had rescued two girls, aged nine and 14, from being sold across the border to China and arrested two children trafficking suspects.

-- Vietnam’s National Wage Council voted in favor of a proposal on a 6.5 percent increase for the region-based minimum wage during its third meeting on the issue on Monday. The proposal, which will send the minimum wages for employees to VND2.58 million ($114) - VND3.98 million ($175) depending on regions, will be submitted to the government for consideration.

-- Vietjet will offer 200,000 super-promotional air tickets priced from zero dong from August 9 to 13, the budget carrier announced on Monday.

-- Low-cost Jetstar Pacific Airlines will launch its inaugural flight connecting Dong Hoi, the capital of the north-central Vietnamese province of Quang Binh, and the Thai province of Chiang Mai this Friday, the former's provincial tourism department said on Monday.

Lifestyle

-- The Trinh Cong Son Street, lying adjacent to the Ho Tay (West Lake) in Hanoi, will be turned into a walking street on August 19.
