Thirteen Vietnamese participants are on their way to join the WorldSkills Competition 2017 in the United Arab Emirates.

A ceremony was held to farewell the participants in Hanoi on Saturday.

According to the competition’s website, there are 1,258 participants from 77 countries and regions to compete in 51 different skills in the 44th WorldSkills Competition.

Vietnam’s 13 participants will compete in 12 fields of skill including car technology, cooking, pipe implementation and brick building.

This year’s competition appears to be more difficult and more complicated than in the previous year’s.

More than 30 percent of the open-book problems have been changed, however the announcement was only made three days in advance.

The questions suggested by the associations are kept confidential until no more than three days before the competition.

This year’s WorldSkills Competition will be held from October 15 to October 18 in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

On the sidelines of the competition, there will also be the WorldSkills Conference 2017 featuring a panel discussion.

Cao Van Sam, vice-director of the Vocational Education and Training Division under the Vietnamese Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, says that this is the fifth time Vietnam has taken part.

To prepare, the Vocational Education and Training directorate has worked with ministries, other directorates, as well as educational centers, and local and foreign corporations to support and provide the participants with proper training.

In 2015, around 1,300 participants from 67 countries and territories took part in the 43rd WorldSkills Competition.

Vietnam was represented by 14 participants competing in 13 different skills including Korean, computer science, pipe implementation and car technology.

Nguyen Duy Thanh, a participant competing in the field of computer science, became the first Vietnamese to win a medal in the competition when he took home a bronze.

The WorldSkills Competition, first held in 1950 in Spain, is a biennial event which aims to promote skill, excellence and development through international cooperation.

Participants must not be more than 22 years of age, and in some fields, no more than 25 years of age.

The competition is one of the biggest vocational events globally with 75 member countries and regions.
