Politics:

- On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons on October 1, Vo Van Thuong, a member of the Party’s Central Committee, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, paid a visit to 100-year-old Nguyen Van Niet and 103-year-old Nguyen Duc Dam, both residing in District 9.

- On October 1, Minister of Construction Trinh Dinh Dung requested that the construction and investment management board of HCMC urban traffic works ensure the progress of a project to improve the city’s water environment. The project has a total investment capital of VND11,281 billion (US$530.97 million) and is expected to be finished in 2020.

Society:

- The HCMC Department of Transport has recently reported to the city’s People’s Committee its consultation with related agencies on replacing Thu Duc District’s Binh Loi railway bridge, which is seriously degraded after 110 years of operation. The cost for the new 521.2 meter bridge crossing the Saigon River is around VND1,000 billion (US$47.07 million).

- 130 grenades were found under a house on Binh Gia Street in the coastal city of Vung Tau when the owner was building the house. The Ba Ria – Vung Tau provincial Military Commander’s infantry force on October 1 safely handled all of the weapons.

-  A downpour on October 1 flooded many areas in Ho Chi Minh City, marking the fourth continuous day that many parts of the city were filled with water.

- Dang Van Tuan, 44, from Cau Kho Ward in HCMC’s District 1, has been detained by the police for investigation. Tuan is the first suspect in a murder in which the victim was cut into pieces in an effort to destroy eveidence.

Business:

- Nearly one ton of meat floss which didn’t meet the food safety requirements was detected on October 1 at an illegal manufacturing facility run by Do Thi Tan, 30, in Binh Chanh District. The dirty floss is to be destroyed, together with an amount of contaminated boiled chicken found at the plant.

Lifestyle:

- Around 100 artists from Vietnam and other countries will gather for the Monsoon Music Festival 2014, which is being held for the first time in Hanoi. The two-day event, staring from October 2, is part of the highlighted cultural events in a series of activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Vietnamese capital's liberation from French rule (October 10, 1954).

- The Asia-Europe New Music Festival in Vietnam 2014 will be organized in Ha Noi and Ha Long from October 8 to 12. The festival continues the success of the International New Music Festival: “Europe – Asia,” founded by the Ministry of Culture, the Union of Composers of the Russian Federation, and the Union of Composers of Tatarstan, in 1993.

- The top five finalists of the 2014 Vietnamese version of the famous cooking reality show MasterChef will be revealed in an episode broadcast on October 4 on VTV3.
