About nine or ten storms or tropical depressions will be seen in the East Vietnam Sea this year, the Vietnamese National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has said. This is less than the annual average number of about 12 storms in many previous years, according to the center. The lower forecast this year is due to the effects of the El Nino phenomenon, which will likely appear during the year’s storm season, the center said. In the face of El Nino, both the number and intensity of storms or depressions will drop, the agency explained. Of the forecast nine to ten storms or depressions, four or five will directly affect the mainland of Vietnam, the agency warned. In previous years, the country was directly affected by five or six storms or tropical low pressures per year, the agency added. Sunny and hot weather this summer will have more of an impact on the northern and central regions than the southern region, the center forecast. However, such hot weather will be less severe and prolonged than that in 2014, the center said.
