Police in the northern province of Quang Ninh, with the aid of their counterparts from the Ministry of Public Security, inspected three suspicious trucks that had been loaded with goods transported into Vietnam by ferryboats carrying goods from China on early Sunday morning.  Inspectors found a large volume of illicit goods, including electronics, household utensils, fabric, baby formula milk products bearing well-known world brands. The weight of these goods is about 20 tons, and the trucks’ drivers failed to show any documents to prove the cargo’s legality. From the testimonies from these drivers, police raided many warehouses in Quang Ninh and found a lot of smuggled goods, which had been transported to Vietnam from China.  At the storage of the Mong Cai Trading Company, police seized more than 100 tons of various goods, including fabric, clothing, cosmetics and used electronics. The smuggling ring’s leader is Luu Van Thang, 36, from the province’s Mong Cai Town. Thang and his wife fled from their residence after the raid, police said.  More than 100 police officers were mobilized to take part in the crackdown. The total value of the illicit goods is estimated at over VND50 billion (US$2.35 million), according to Lao Dong newspaper. Police also detained 10 people involved in the smuggling ring. The ring could have smuggled thousands of tons of goods per year, police said. Police are expanding their investigation into the case and hunting for Thang, his wife and others involved in the smuggling ring.
