Vietnam junior professionals win 5th Asean School Games

The Vietnamese team including juniors of professional sports training classes and athletes of the national teams won 50 gold medals to top the 2013 Asean School Games that concluded yesterday in Hanoi.

Malaysia followed on the medal tally with 25 gold medals to stand second. Thailand and Indonesia ranked third and fourth with 24 and 17 gold medals respectively.

Notably, Singapore sent to Hanoi a team of all high school students, who grabbed as many as eight gold medals to rank fifth out of eight participant teams.

Vietnam dominated the competitions in swimming and aerobics events. It won 9 out of 15 golds for swimming and 7 out of 8 golds for aerobics events.

Outstanding swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien of the host team won 8 gold medals and a bronze.

The fifth edition of the games, which started on June 23, drew the participation 1,500 competitors and officials from eight national teams in the region to compete in nine sports including sepatakraw, badminton, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, and pencak silt – a martial art of Indonesia.

Other participant nations are Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines, and Laos.

The host Vietnam sent 248 athletes to take part in all nine sports of the tourney, which was estimated to cost around VND40 billion (US$1.9 million) for organization.
