The German General Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City has been allowed to lease a land plot at a symbolic price to build a “German House” in the southern Vietnamese city’s downtown area after a signing ceremony on Tuesday.

The land plot at 3 – 5 Le Van Huu Street in District 1 has been rented to the German General Consulate for one Vietnamese dong ($0.000047) for a 99-year term, according to the deal it closed with the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

The 3,500-square-meter lot will be the location of the German House, which is intended to “provide a joint domicile for all the German institutions operating there as well as for interested German entrepreneurs,” according to a note on the German foreign ministry’s website.

The German Consul General to HCMC, Dr. Hans - Dieter Stell, reiterated at the signing ceremony that the German House will be home to the operations of the General Consulate and German businesses.

The German and Vietnamese governments reached an agreement on legal issues relating to the land plot in Hanoi on October 11, 2011, during an official visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Vietnam, according to a notice on the website of the German General Consulate in the southern metropolis.
