Graduate school chastises student for bribing professor

A Ho Chi Minh City graduate school has given a written warning to one of its students for bribing a professor in return for a passing score for his class.

The Graduate Institute under the University of Economics – Ho Chi Minh City, a top-tier higher education institution, found that Le Xuan Q., a 28-year-old masters student who is also the president of his class, told his classmates on January 1 that each of them should give VND500,000 (US$24) to their professor of philosophy so that he would pass them all.

One day later a student appointed by Q. collected a total of VND22 million ($1,048) from 44 out of the class’s 80 students and wrote down a list of the contributors as evidence they had paid.

Q. then wrapped the sum in a gift box and handed it to the professor, after which an anonymous person reported the incident in writing to the school, which immediately launched an investigation.

The student explained to his school’s inspectors that he simply wanted to help his professor after knowing learning of the educator’s economic hardship during a previous visit to his house.

He claimed that the professor did not know about the cash inside the gift, adding that he asked to return it to Q. the next day when he found the money.

“After that two other students and I came to a coffee shop and received the VND22 million from the professor, and apologized to him for any misunderstanding,” Q. said.

Dr Pham Thanh Tam, chief of the inspection office at the school, confirmed that the students got their money back, adding that Q. merely took precautions because he is a high-performing student.

“Students tend to worry about low scores and hope to have some privileges from their professors so sometimes they simply cross the red line,” Tam said.

Neither Q.’s peers nor the professor has received any punishment so far despite their involvement in the scandal.

This was the first time the school had cracked down on such academic dishonesty, even though such incidents have been heard about for a long time, the inspector said.

“We stepped in this time because a student had sent us a letter detailing the case,” Tam explained, “while the previous incidents were just spread by word of mouth.”
